Starting with a Real Conversation
Before I even touch my camera, I take a moment to talk with my clients. We chat about who they are, their vision for the shoot and sometimes even random everyday things. This chat breaks the ice and builds trust. It turns the session into something that feels more like spending time with a friend than a formal photoshoot.
Guiding Instead of Posing
Most people don’t know how to pose, and that is perfectly okay. I give gentle direction rather than strict instructions. Instead of telling someone to stand straight and smile, I might say, “Take a slow breath and look over your shoulder like you just saw an old friend.' This approach helps them relax and show their real personality.
Adding a Bit of Movement
I love including movement in my sessions. I might ask someone to walk slowly, fix their hair, or laugh while we talk. Movement takes away stiffness and helps create natural, authentic moments. It also gives me the chance to capture those in-between expressions that feel genuine.
Showing Sneak Peeks During the Shoot
One of my favourite tricks is showing clients a few photos on the camera screen while we’re still shooting. When they see how good they look, their confidence grows right away. Once that happens, they open up more and their energy changes in the best way.
Creating a Comfortable Space
The environment plays a big role. Whether we are outside or in the studio, I make sure the space feels easy and welcoming. I play music, give them time to settle in and make sure they feel in control of their image. When people feel safe, their true personality comes out naturally.
Encouragement Throughout the Session
I believe that honest encouragement goes a long way. A simple “you’re doing great” or “that looks beautiful” can completely shift how someone feels in front of the camera. It is not about forced compliments. It is about genuinely noticing special moments and letting the person know.
